Sony's PlayStation 5 Sales Top 40 Million

Sony's PlayStation 5 Sales Top 40 Million

Sony Group Corp has sold more than 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles, its gaming division said on Thursday. The company attributed the strong sales to the easing of supply chain problems.

"It took months for supply chains to normalize so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand," Sony Interactive CEO Jim Ryan wrote in a blog post. "Now PS5 supply is well-stocked and we are seeing that pent up demand finally being met."

Sony has said it expects to sell 25 million PS5 units this year, which would be a record for any PlayStation device. The company's latest console is closing the gap with the PS4 console, said Piers Harding-Rolls, analyst at Ampere Analysis.

"The PS5 is now selling at a faster rate than the PS4 did at the same point in its lifecycle," Harding-Rolls said. "If Sony can continue to meet demand, it looks on track to sell more than 100 million PS5s by the end of its lifecycle."

The strong sales of the PS5 are a boon for Sony, which is facing increasing competition from Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S consoles. The two companies are locked in a battle for market share in the console gaming market, and the PS5's strong sales are a sign that Sony is winning the fight.

Here are some additional details:

  • The PS5 was released in November 2020.
  • The console has been praised for its powerful hardware and its next-generation features.
  • The PS5 has been a victim of supply chain problems, which have made it difficult for Sony to meet demand.
  • Despite the supply chain problems, the PS5 has been a commercial success.
  • Sony expects to sell 25 million PS5 units this year.
  • The PS5 is closing the gap with the PS4 console.
